exotic drumsticks
13.09 09:24 - exotic drumsticksduring my 5 yr stay in kuwait, i had picked up some interesting recipes from my room mates, all of them belonging to tamilnadu. tried one recipe last nite, it turned out wonderful, and brought back so many memories of those fun filled kuwait days! so thought of sharing with you all. drumsticks fans will love it sure.... and people have different ways of eating drumsticks. my friend ellapan krishna ( remember a post in his name?) loves to chew a piece of drumstick, found in sambar, for 10 mins, extracts out all the pulp, and throws out the remains. and he wud do this at the end of the meal.... i used to tell him he resembled a cow, sitting under a tree, quietly chewing away....
neways, slit the drumsticks in the centre, lengthwise, and you will have 2 long halves. take a spoon, and scrape the pulp out. a tedious process, but out of say 15 drumsticks, you will have a bowlful of raw pulp.
now heat oil in a pan, i prefer coconut oil for this recipe. and temper with urad dal, small red chillies, curry leaves(lots of them), mustard seeds, and a pinch of asafoetida! add to this finely chopped onion(1 large onion). fry the oinion on low gas till transparent, and add the drumstick pulp. fry for a while, and add a small amount of water, just enough to cook, and cover. add salt to taste, a pinch of sambar masala if you wish, i dont add any masala.cook on low gas for 10 mins, or till done. sprinkle fresh grated coconut, squeeze half a lemon juice, and serve with chapatis or as an accompaniment with rasam/sambar rice.
you will miss the pleasure of chewing drumsticks here, but still its worth believe me....
another colleague of mine called it drumstick bharta, but i prefer to call this dish 'exotic drumsticks'! bon apetit!!
